Djinn is a fast uprising versatile DJ and producer. Although she did not play any instruments when she was younger, she had always displayed a creative and original persona and had been drawn to music and art from an early age. In her early teens Djinn developed a taste for broken beats, shunning commercial four-to-the-floor music and listening to hip hop before getting into breakbeat, drum & bass, and later on, dubstep. Not a stranger to the underground music scene, she had been attending various raves, nights and events before she discovered an interest in DJ’ing. Djinn learnt to mix breaks aged 17, and spent her first year improving her mixing by practicing on friend’s turntables at house parties. Although she did not acquire her own decks until a year and a half later, she began playing out in a matter of months, spinning at Illegal outdoor raves and clubs even though she was under the legal age of club entry. Djinn was given the chance to play at Manchester’s longest running night ‘Tangled’ within a year of learning to mix. She became resident drum & bass / jungle DJ for local night ‘One Day’ whilst living in Lancaster. Soon after Djinn had mastered the art of mixing, she began to take the next progressive step to production. Although she had no previous musical experience she decided to study contemporary music performance and production regardless of this limitation. Djinn has recorded, engineered and produced for local artists, and has been working hard honing her technical ability in order to follow her dream of production. She has also developed a big interest in turntablism influenced by the hip hop/DMC movement and turntablists such as Qbert, Cash Money, Craze and Shortee. She is currently improving her scratching and beat juggling to a higher standard. Djinn is an ambitious Jack of all trades; not content with DJ’ing and production alone, she started to promote her own night ‘Urban Warfare’ which was launched in Lancaster on 28th September 2007. Hailing from Lancaster (although originally born in Manchester), Djinn soon realized opportunities in and around the area were extremely limited; consequently she has returned to live in Manchester. In the 3 years she has been mixing, Djinn has smashed her signature dark and heavy selection at various nights in the north west as well as a few further a field in the rest of the UK, most recently playing a 3 hour set at the VW Extra festival in Shropshire. She is currently studying music technology and continues to carve her underground persona….
